The following list of links is offered as a
resource in the study of factory monitoring.
Parallel to the adoption of voluntary codes of conduct (which mandate,
among other things, the payment of living wages, limits on the number
of hours worked per week, an end to child labor and prison labor,
and the right to organize unions and bargain collectively), factory
inspection has emerged as a method to ensure company compliance with
code protocols. These efforts fall into four general categories:
- internal monitoring, conducted by the manufacturer's staff
- company-hired external monitoring, conducted by commercial firms
hired by the manufacturer
- external independent monitoring, conducted by local or international
NGOs, funded by private foundations and labor and religious organizations
- trade unions, using codes to push for improvements in specific
plants
The links below point to different organizations that advocate different
monitoring methods, and that provide research papers and discussions.
They do not signify endorsement by the Henning Center, and are only
